Philippines’ DOST Launches Blockchain Technology Seminar Program

The Philippines’ Department of Science and Technology (DOST) launches a blockchain technology seminar program to encourage the country’s scientists and technologists to investigate blockchain technology and its implementation in the Philippines.

The purpose of the training, according to DOST official Enrico Paringit, is to examine how blockchain might be used in sectors like healthcare, financial support, and emergency help.

According to a local news report, the department is also looking at how blockchain can be utilized in the issuing of passports and visas, trademark registration, and government documents.

Enrico Paringit, DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD), added that the ₱1.6 million program, approximately 30.4k USD will cover 70 information technology specialists and researchers in the DOST network.

Even the PCIEERD had trouble developing the training program, according to Paringit, because there appeared to be a lack of local competence in the growing technology.

“We had challenges getting experts or seasoned developers to share know-how on blockchain-based systems development,” Paringit stated.

While cryptocurrency is a popular usage of blockchain, the DOST official stated that the department’s goal is to develop non-cryptocurrency applications.

They aim to train the blockchain developers who can properly assist the government with various blockchain applications.

Philippines Science and Technology Secretary Fortunato dela Peña stated “It is appearing to be an important emerging technology that we have to be in on.” The secretary completely supports the DOST’s entry into blockchain technology research.
